Eddie Alvarez Retains Title

Last night at Bellator 39 concluded with Eddie Alvarez holding the belt once again in the lightweight division. Alvarez who is touted among many as a top ten, possible top five fighter in the world among the lightweight division, only has seen one loss (to Shinya Aoki) in the past four years.

His opponent coming into the cage last night was Pat Curran, the winner of last season's Bellator Lightweight tournament. Curran had to win three consecutive fights to earn the shot at the title which proved no easy task. His first opponent, a sparring partner of GSP's, ended in a KO.

The following fight against UFC veteran, Roger Huerta ended in a decision unanimously. Then there was the hard fought fight in the finals against Toby Imada in which Curran saw the better half of a split decision.

The first round of Bellator 39's main event saw to the superior boxing of Alvarez. Ducking, dipping, weaving like a video game, Alvarez moved in and out with accuracy, speed and precision to land strikes on Curran. Constant motion left Curran swinging and catching air for the most part.

Pat Curran did stuff the take downs of Alvarez though in his defense. Not once in the first two rounds did the fight go to the ground, stuffing every shot Eddie threw. Unfortunately this left open spots for Alvarez to land his punches.

After the second round I had the scorecard 20-18 in favor of Alvarez. At this point my DVR had stopped recording my program because MTV2's showing went way past their time slot. So from here I will direct you to MMA Junkie where you can read about the entire bout if you wish.
