Ben Askren is running his mouth once again, although this time it's about the current and reigning UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre.
Now, I am not sure what it is with fighters who are in the smaller organizations, but they seem like angry red-headed step children. The champions in their respected organizations always like to run their mouth and make believe that the UFC in not the upper eschelon in the sport and that they, themselves have the ability to destroy anyone in their way.
I understand the need to have a positive attitude that sometimes borders on cocky, because otherwise you're are a fighter with no confidence, and with confidence comes lack of hesitation. If you hesitate if fighting, it could be the difference between a tapout and a knockout.
Askren is calling out Georges as he failed to finish his most recent fight. The Canadian has failed to finish in his last five fights, all ending in decision. His previous bouts that we once saw, Matt Serra KO's and quick scrambles to take the back have mutated to a hesitant jabber who keeps his opponents at bay for five rounds.
The irony in this, is that Askren is one who does not finish either, and has ended his previous four fights in decisions. He comes from a wrestling background. He has been trained to bully opponents and look for pins, not submissions or knockouts. Askren is realistic in his knowledge of his own stand-up game but still believes with his knowledge of wrestling alone, he could dismantle the current UFC Welterweight champ.
A few quotes from the Askren in the article:
"I mean yeah, obviously it's my goal to be the best fighter in the world and at this time the only way to do that is through the UFC. So yeah, I'll be in the UFC and hopefully it won't be that long."
(Fighters like Thiago Alves and Anthony Johnson who fail to make weight are) "just cowards. They should bump up a weight class. What are you scared of fighting guys bigger than you? If you really, truly can't make, say 170, you're gonna be fairly good sized for 185. I mean I walk around anywhere between 183 and 187. And 170, I can make it and it's not that difficult."
"So yeah, those guys are idiots. I think it's immature and cowardly."
