Overeem (35-11 MMA, 3-0 SF) defeated Werdum (14-5-1 MMA, 3-1 SF) by scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 in the main event of "Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum," but the fight won't be remembered as a triumphant return for the well-traveled fighter who fought stateside for the first time in 13 months after putting two more titles on his mantle – one in kickboxing and one in MMA.
The Overeem that walked into this past Saturday's fight came in as a heavy favorite and, in many fans' eyes, was someone destined to avenge his 2006 loss to Werdum and build steam for a shot at UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.
The Overeem that walked out of the cage was a guy in for a long road against the big-man division's best, to say nothing of the remainder of the grand prix field.
The champ said Werdum's butt-flopping insistence on getting the three-round fight to the mat wasn't exactly what he had prepared for.
"I expected more standup action," Overeem said. "Fabricio was talking a lot before in the media, so I expected him to make more of a fight out of it. Lying down on his back all the time took the pace of the fight away.
"It's hard to fight somebody who doesn't want to fight and is sort of dodging the fight."
