GSP Was Looking For Finish

Georges St. Pierre and camp confirm that they decided to employ weird game plan for the night.

In a recent interview with Dana White, Ariel Helwani asked the UFC President his take on something odd. He asked Dana for some personal insight on the the overhand right that the Canadian was throwing all night. GSP is known for his technical striking and precise take downs, but not his wild overhand right. But apparently, this was just all part of the plan.

While this does not seem like the most intelligent of offensive techniques, it is a game plan nonetheless. Dan Henderson caught Shields last year in their bout with a strong overhand right, and it seems to be apparent that his set-up shows a chink in the armour in that department. But the question lies, is that really a smart tactic to employ?

GSP's Trainer Zahabi stated:

“Shields has been suspect to that punch before. He got hit with it with Henderson. Georges landed it a few times. I felt he staggered him, but didn’t land exactly on the chin. It landed a lot on the side of the head,”

“You could tell Georges was really trying to finish the fight. He threw a lot of overhand rights, they were a little wild, but that just shows how much he wanted it to land hard. He wasn’t conservative, he wasn’t playing a tight boxing game. He was throwing those bombs to hopefully really hurt Jake Shields.”
